Activity Time

Post by Trellmor » Fri Feb 11, 2011 2:31 pm

We recently had a discussion about activity time and what activity time means. But unfortunately WoL doesn't really have a definition about the activity time anywhere.

So, how exactly is activity Time calculated?

World of Logs counts activity by adding up all active times that it sees. A period of 10 seconds of inactivity ends an "active period". Let's say that you had the following sequence

Code: Select all

t00:04 - action (+4)
t00:05 - action (+1)
t00:11 - action (+6)
t00:13 - action (+2)
t00:25 - action (+12)
t00:27 - action (+3)
t00:35 - end (+8)
In this sequence of events there are 2 periods of activity: from 00:04 to 00:13, and from 00:25 to 00:35. This means there would be 16 seconds of inactivity (the 4 seconds at the start, and the 12 second gap). Only TYPE_DAMAGE or TYPE_HEAL events will reset the inactivity timer. Hope that helps ;)

What is the definition of "Activity Time", btw??? In other words, if I had an activity time of 94% in a Magmaw fight...what would that stat be telling me?

Thank you

Activity time is a measure of how long you were actively doing things to a target. So a time of 94% means that for 6% of the fight you hadn't done anything for 10 seconds, whether that is due to running out of fire and not being able to cast, or just not doing anything you can't really tell just from the stat alone.

For an exact description, read the post directly above yours to see how it is calculated.

Appreciate the explaination, Arc...

BTW, would an activity time of 94% on Magmaw be considered good?

Am I correct in thinking that casting Power Word: Shield (for example) doesn't generate an "active" event until the shield is absorbed?

WoL differentiates between "damage active time" and "healing active time". Only TYPE_DAMAGE and TYPE_HEAL events, respectively, are considered when calculating this active time. Therefore, SPELL_AURA_APPLIED (shield cast) and SPELL_AURA_REFRESH (shield update) currently have no influence whatsoever on active time.

The % of limit active time is completely screwed up. I'm a shadow priest, and in the heroic Halfus fight I had a DOT uptime of 97.7%,97.4% and my 3rd DOT had an uptime of 82%,but only had an active time of 82.2%. So I was constantly doing damage with my DOTs(which were my top 2 damaging spells), but had a low active time, despite being alive for the entire kill. Does active time not count DOT's? Or do the rankings hurt players who rely mainly on DOT's for their damage?

Rankings don't have anything to do with active time... the only thing that is affected by active time is DPS. Rankings are based on DPS(e) which is (Total damage done / Total fight time).
Maihem might be able to say more on the possible DoTs not counting issue, others can look into it as well if you linked an example report.

The "% of limit" column indicates how high your DPSe is relative to the lowest ranked (#200) character for that fight/mode/spec. If it contains a value below 100%, you were not ranked because you simply didn't make the top 200.

Regarding active time on DoTs; they should extend active time, being damage events. If you can link a log that lists a low active time which you think is wrong, we could verify that.
